About eResearch SA

eResearch SA is a collaborative joint venture between the University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia and has been established to supersede the former South Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing (SAPAC).

The mission of eResearch SA is to support the development, implementation and use of eResearch methodologies and activities in South Australia and to provide access to eresearch facilities and practical support for researchers from all disciplines.

eResearch SA provides research collaboration, data management, high performance computing, and visualisation and haptics facilities, services, expertise, and training to researchers from all disciplines with a view to enabling new and exciting research opportunities that would not otherwise be available.

Established in 2007 to coordinate the implementation of national and state eresearch strategies in South Australia, eResearch SA has three key functions:

  • To provide eresearch support to the South Australian research community.

eResearch SA is committed to providing resources in long-term eresearch infrastructure, services, support and training in South Australia for the benefit of all researchers.

eResearch SA will locate a critical mass of expertise and resources in South Australia and drive long-lasting change in the research landscape by establishing close operating and support relationships with researchers and institutions.

  • To serve as the South Australian partner of ARCS.

The Australian Research Collaboration Service (ARCS) provides national advanced computing, collaboration, and data fabric infrastructure and services. It is funded in part by the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research through its Platforms for Collaboration (PfC) capability within the National Collaborative Infrastructure Strategy. In particular, ARCS is funded to deliver the Interoperability & Collaboration Infrastructure component of PfC. eResearch SA is the South Australian member of ARCS.

  • To serve as the state node of anticipated future national eResearch activities.

eResearch SA is expected to work closely with the Australian National Data Service (ANDS), another component of PfC.

The Commonwealth eResearch Coordinating Committee has recommended the establishment of a national eResearch Centre, along with multiple nodes to accelerate skills development and raise awareness of eResearch methods and applications. As the South Australian body responsible for supporting and promoting eResearch within the State, eResearch SA will work in partnership with the national eResearch Centre and other state nodes, if such centres are initiated, to support eResearch capability development and cooperation across the country.

eResearch SA will continue to address any remaining gaps in South Australian eresearch and ICT infrastructure through Commonwealth, National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) and State-funded initiatives. The South Australian Government has encouraged strategic alignment of the State's capability to the priority initiatives funded under the NCRIS program.

eResearch SA is governed by the eResearch SA Board, which comprises a Deputy Vice-President & Vice-Chancellor (Research) or Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) from the three partner universities, and a representative from the State Government of South Australia.

The eResearch SA Board is assisted in management by the eResearch SA Management Committee, which comprises representatives from eResearch SA and the three universities.
