eResearch SA's High Performance Computing User Forum

eResearch SA's HPC User Forum is your opportunity to find out about current developments and contribute your ideas to the HPC user community. The purpose of this monthly event is to give you an opportunity to meet with other HPC users and the eResearch SA HPC team; ask questions and raise concerns; and inform yourself of current and planned developments.

The forum is open to all registered HPC users. Meetings will comprise:
  • An overview of current developments and plans from eResearch SA management
  • A 15 minute presentation from a fellow user or HPC vendor
  • A Question & Answer session where you will have the opportunity to ask questions and inform us of any approaching needs
  • Afternoon tea and an opportunity to network with other HPC users.

About the Forum

eResearch SA aims to provide expert high performance computing (HPC) facilities and user support, enabling South Australia's research community to conduct advanced research.

As a user of our HPC systems, we invite you to participate in our new eResearch SA User Forum. Meetings will be held monthly, and will be chaired by the eResearch SA Director and/or Deputy Director.

So that we can best respond to you, we ask that you submit your questions or items for discussion before the meeting.

Previous Meetings

Date: Wednesday 24 March 2010
Time: 3pm - 4pm
Location: eResearch SA meeting room, Level 1 Physics Building, University of Adelaide
Presenter: Associate Professor Jochen Kaempf, Lecturer in Oceanography, Flinders University
Presentation: The Impact of High Performance Computing on Ocean Modelling
In South Australia no issue is more important than water. To ensure drinking water is available in times of severe drought the State Government has invested $228 million in building a seawater desalination plant at Port Stanvac, Adelaide.

Associate Professor Jochen Kaempf, Lecturer in Oceanography, and his research group at Flinders University have been using eResearch SA’s supercomputing facilities for hydrodynamic modelling purposes in a rich variety of applications.

In this presentation Jochen will described how he used eResearch SA’s high performance computing facilities to model the mixing of desalination brine with seawater to measure the impact on the dilution of salinity in sea water, and monitor the risk of marine pollution.

His research has gone on to play an important role in assessing the viability of BHP Billiton’s proposal to build a seawater desalination plant in Upper Spencer Gulf as part of the Olympic Dam expansion. More...
